Influx of slaves 1400s; mostly in Iberian peninsula (Spain/Portugal) as spoils of war, though some made it up north by late 1500sBlack slaves were v sought after; more ‘exotic’ than white slaves, nobles had portraits done w/ slaves in background to show off wealth
B/c no large-scale agriculture in Europe, didn't have the same kind of huge agricultural slavery that the Americas would have later on; more localized work
