Italy = international candy; subject to decades of fighting from Germany (Habsburg) and France (Valois) over Italian territory | EFFECT: made it hard to unify city states / est common foreign policy --> italy wasnt unified UNTIL 1870

parallel conflict: austrian house of habsburg had inherited county of burgundy (md eastern france) through marriages in late 1400s, and france was pissed bc they viewed it as theirs.
