v strict; convinced people that french invasion of milan was God punishing Italy for its moral vice --> Florentines expelled Medici dynasty and let him rule instead | v popular at first for being no-nonsense; reorganized govt, passed laws against homosexuality, adultery, drunkenness, organized morality police to parole the streets, burned 'vanities' (clothes, makeup, books, instruments, art, poetry, etc) | eventually people got sick of him; was excommunicated by pope, burned, and replaced once again by Medicis
