Kingdom of Benin (15 sept. 1180 – 17 août 1897)
Description:
Led by Oba (which means King), the Portuguese began trade with them in the 18th century. They set up barracoons (warehouses to store trade products, and later humans). They had the pepper and ivory in monopoly, along with major production of palm oil and cloth. In the 18th century the demand for slaves drastically increased, leading for need for bigger barracoons, the largest of which was called "Elmina Castle" in Ghana.
