GE and IT both recognized Franco's gov in 1936

RU sent aid to the republican side in reaction to this

The war became international in character, with countries coming to the aid of the republicans and rebels

Britain tried to est. a non-intervention committee, purpose to prevent other powers from becoming engaged in the war by withholding military aid form both sides

1936 - Council of the League resolved that all other states were under obligation not to intervene. Didn't stop volunteers from going to the gov's side or fascist govs from violating the agreement and sending aid to Franco

Chief significance was it revealed that nationalistic dictatorships of IT and GE could/would ally to defeat democratic governments and could be successful. It was the start of the Axis
