League of 3 Emperors, Dreikaiserbund (5 janv. 1873 – 1 janv. 1887)

Description:

AKA Dreikaiserbund. Formed by Bismarck between Prussia, Austria, and Russia. Bismarck, Emperor Francis Joseph and Count Andrassy in AU, and Alexander II in Russia.

A revival of the 'Holy Alliance,' which had been weakened in '48-9. AU wanted alliance w/ Bismarck against Russia; Russia frightened of GE-AU combination against it.

Useful for keeping FR in diplomatic isolation and attempting to ease AU-RU rivalries in the east.

1873 - 78 (Berlin conference) and revived 1881 - 87. Fell apart b/c of strong conflict b/w AU and RU in Balkans
