Crimean War (9 mars 1854 – 1 févr. 1856)

Description:

Turkey had granted France's request of recognition of the full claims of Latin Christians in the Holy Land to share in admin of sanctuaries. Russia wanted the same. Jan 1853, tsar moved troops to borders of Moldavia and Wallachia. Sultan refused to recognize RU as protectorate of Christians in Balkans, and Russia occupied M and W. BR and FR move ships into Black Sea; Russia attacks a Turkish naval squadron. March 1954, BR and FR declare war on RU. War lagged on with no real accomplishments. New tsar signed peace agreement in Feb 1856. Outcome was very indecisive.

Peace settlement held in Paris - Napoleon gained prestige. Cavour gained status by being at the int'l conference.
