Construction of the Panama Canal (13 mars 1904 – 21 juill. 1917)

Description:

Following the Failure of the French to establish a canal in Panama, and with the construction of the United States Canal in Nicaragua, the United Kingdom's interest in a Central American Canal grew rapidly.

The Colombian government however began to doubt the ability of the Europeans to actually construct the canal and had began to draft plans for their own canal where the French had left off.

British negotiators met in Colombia and in 1896, the Treaty of Panama was signed. It transferred ownership of the Miskito Protectorate to Colombia in exchange for land to build the canal.

The United Kingdom began actual construction of the canal in 1897, following the import of workers from British Honduras, British Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, the May Protectorate, Jamaica, and various smaller British islands.

In 1902, the land grant was established as the Crown Colony of Columbus [the English name for the capital of Colón] and eight years later, the canal was completed.
