The rotary phone (1 janv. 1882 – 1 janv. 1960)

Description:

The rotary phone was the next upgrade in telephone technology. The inventor of the rotary phone was Almon Brown Strowger, an undertaker from Kansas City, Missouri. He believed an operator was redirecting business to his competition instead of connecting potential customers to him. Brown developed a solution to his concerns by creating the rotary pulse dialing system that didn't need an operator. Callers could manually rotate the dial to the numbers needed to directly connect their call. The dialing system sent the number of pulses equal to the dialed digit. The pulses were then decoded at the telephone exchange by counting them and automatically connected the caller to the desired number. In 1891 Brown received a patent for the automatic telephone exchange and in 1892 a patent for the rotary dial. His innovation became a household staple for decades like our cellphones are today.
