The Gulf War began when Iraq, under Saddam Hussein, invaded and annexed Kuwait. A U.S.-led coalition of 42 countries launched Operation Desert Shield to defend Saudi Arabia and build up forces, followed by Operation Desert Storm, which began with an intensive aerial campaign and ended with a rapid ground offensive that liberated Kuwait within 100 hours. The war included extensive use of advanced U.S. weaponry, live televised combat footage, and some of the largest tank battles in American history. Iraq’s missile attacks on Israel failed to fracture the coalition, while Iraqi forces set fire to Kuwaiti oil wells, causing massive environmental damage. By the war’s end, coalition forces had decisively defeated Iraq but ultimately did not remove Saddam Hussein from power. Iraq possessed and threatened to use biological chemical weapons (these were used against Iran and the Kurdish people of Iraq.
