Description:

Geography: Egypt-Libyan border
Duration: July 21- July 24 1977
Warring Factions: Egypt (Under President Anwar Sadat) vs Libya (Under Muammar Gaddafi)

Description: The Egyptian-Libyan war was a brief border conflict triggered by worsening relations between the Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Gaddafi opposed Sadat’s peace initiatives with Israel and accused him of betraying Arab unity. Small clashes occurred along the border previously and now it was escalated into open fighting when Libyan forces attacked Egyptian forces. The Egyptians launched a counter-attack into Libyan territory, inflicting heavy losses. After the four days of war, both sides accepted a ceasefire proposed by other Arab Regions where they also “convinced Sadat to not launch a full-scale invasion of Libya”. Fighting ended quickly however, political hostility between the two countries persisted for a while.
