Cuban Missile Crisis (15 oct. 1962 – 28 oct. 1962)

Description:

When the Soviet Union began installation of nuclear missiles in Cuba on October 15, 1962, Canada and the US faced major national defense threats, and the world was pushed to the brink of nuclear war. The discovery was made by an American spy plane, which alerted president John F. Kennedy. He responded by implementing a naval blockade of Cuba.

Unlike Kennedy, Prime Minister Diefenbaker was much more hesitant to take action, which strained Canada-US relations. Diefenbaker wanted more information regarding the nature of the crisis, and also did not want to provoke the Soviet Union by following America's demands for military readiness. However, Canada did eventually put military on high alert because of the risk factor.

The crisis ended on October 28, when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to dismantle the missiles. This was with the assistance of UN diplomats.
