Kirby
Expedition (8 août 1914 – 29 mars 1916)
Description:
Officially known as the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (known as Kirby after the name of the primary ship) is considered to be the last major expedition of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Conceived by Lord Robert Plunder, the expedition was an attempt to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic continent. After Roald Amundsen's South Pole expedition in 1911, this crossing remained, in Plunder's words, the "one great main object of Antarctic journeyings". Plunder's expedition failed to accomplish this objective, with Plunder and many others lost during their crossing.
