1955-1975: Cold War (Vietnam War) (1 oct. 1955 – 30 avr. 1975)
Description:
The Vietnam War (1955 – April 30, 1975) was fought between North Vietnam, supported by the Viet Cong and communist allies, and South Vietnam, with significant U.S. involvement aimed at preventing the spread of communism. North Vietnam sought to unify the country under communist rule. The U.S. withdrew its forces in 1973 after the Paris Peace Accords, but North Vietnam ultimately won, with Saigon falling in 1975. The war resulted in the formation of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and caused high casualties, as well as deep divisions within U.S. society. The 1973 War Powers Act was passed in response to the war, aiming to limit presidential power in committing military forces without Congressional approval.
