Ottoman Empire (1 janv. 1298 – 1 janv. 1822)

Description:

The Ottoman Empire took over Greece for around 400 years, starting in 1299 when the Byzantine Empire fell. The Ottomans were from Turkey and were Muslim, but the Greeks were Chrisitian. Even though the Ottomans took over, they still allowed the Greek people to keep their religion, language, and traditions. Life got tough for Greeks during this time because they had to pay special taxes and didn’t have the same rights as Muslims. Some Greeks became part of the Ottoman government or army, but most lived in small villages and tried to keep to themselves, trying to preserve their way of life. While the Ottomans ruled, Greek culture remained persistent, mostly in the church. Churches in Greece helped the people by educating them and teaching them art. Art and music got simpler but still important, especially in churches and homes. Even though they changed their empire, many Greeks held on and hoped for freedom one day. That hope helped inspire the Greek War of Independence, which began in 1822.
