Baltic Campaign (5 sept. 1915 – 24 janv. 1916)

Description:

German focus, after having swept up in Galicia and Poland, was to march up the Baltic Coast, with the end goal being the capture of Riga and if needed, St. Petersburg. A new commander, recently shipped to Austria to help defend the Carpathians, would be brought in to command the campaign, Hans von Seeckt.

The campaign began with a naval offensive focused on destroying the Baltic Fleet and hence opening Russian shipping to German harassment. The Battle of Gotland ended the campaign as Russian vice-admiral Alexander Kolchak delivered a crushing blow to the Germans, sinking multiple smaller cruisers and two major battleships at the cost of only one Russian battleship and two cruisers. German high command decided from there to shift focus from the naval attack back onto the mainline army, to the shame of von Tirpitz.

The land attacks went far better for the Germans. By the beginning of 1916, German forces would have pushed Western Dvina River.
