1900 : The Great Fire of 1900. (1 juill. 1900 – 14 juill. 1900)

Description:

On July 14, 1900, a massive fire swept through Prescott and burned for 4 hours before it was contained. The exact origin of the fire is unknown. However, it is speculated that it was caused by a forgetful miner leaving a lighted candle unattended in his room. At first, the fire was small and only consumed a portion of the building. The town of Prescott could have put the fire out at this point, but irrigation was so underdeveloped that the city had no resources to stop the flames. This resulted in many important local businesses being burnt to the ground.

After the fire was put out, reconstruction occurred almost immediately. The people of Prescott vowed to never build a new building out of wood. This is reflected in architecture from this time as well as modern architecture. Everything from 1901 onwards has been built from brick and stone.
