1862 - 1863: The Arizona Organic Act establishes the Arizona Territory. (12 mars 1862 – 24 févr. 1863)
Description:
On March 12, The Arizona Organic Act was introduced by representative James M. Ashely. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the bill after it had been approved by Congress. As a result, the Arizona Territory officially separated from the New Mexico Territory and became open to settlers. Although Arizona was established as a territory, it was not established as a state because Congress was worried that it would become a slave state if granted statehood.
