Iraqi Kurdish Civil War (28 mai 1994 – 24 nov 1997)
Description:
Following the establishment of an autonomous, or self-governing, Kurdistan, its rivaling political factions, the KDP and PUK, go to war. Due to the embargo placed on Iraq by the UN following its invasion of Kuwait, Kurdistan's economy is also drastically impacted, restricting any trade with foreign nations. As a result, trading done by the Kurds is done through the black market, or illegal sales. The fighting also included factions from both Iran and Turkey. Eventually, the US gets involved to assist refugees fleeing northern Iraq and to provide humanitarian aid.
Barzani and Talabani, each representing their respective parties, sign a formal agreement to cease hostilities and share power equally. Upwards of 8,000 deaths have been recorded throughout this conflict for both sides.
