-arms race was a critical feature
-caused great political division
-the US was determined to get as many countries as possible into collective security agreements
-the US was more concerned with democracy rather than stability
-Soviet influence was growing in Cuba
-construction of the Berlin Wall and missile bases in Cuba increased tensions
-competition for space exploration
