SALT I (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) (26 mai 1972 – 26 mai 1972)
Description:
The SALT treaties were agreements between the United States and the Soviet Union on the issue of nuclear weapons. SALT I established the principle of arms control, promoted mutual surveillance, and limited the number of defensive missile sites each country could build. It also reduced the number of nuclear submarines each country could have deployed at any given time to limit nuclear strike capabilities. SALT I led to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. Both treaties were effective in beginning the process of reducing the nuclear capabilities of each superpower and promoting mutual surveillance.
