The Potsdam Conference (1945) (17 juill. 1945 – 2 août 1945)

Description:

The leaders of the allied powers – Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union, Winston Churchill of the United Kingdom, and Winston Truman of the United States – met for the first time at the Potsdam Conference, which took place from July 17 to August 2, 1945. This conference, which focused on post-war and reconstruction, was held in Europe. One of the main outcomes of the conference was structuring Germany’s future. The allies decided on a number of measures for German demilitarization and disarmament to prevent any return to militarism established procedures for denazification including holding nazi party members responsible for war crimes, and decided to decentralize german governance structures in order to eliminate centralized power that might result in a return to totalitarian rule. Restoring Germany's basic liberties, including freedom of the press and of speech, was another priority of the meeting. Despite being split up into several occupation zones governed by the us. UK, France, and USSR. It was agreed that Germany would operate as a single economic entity. Additionally, reparations were a major topic of discussion; it was decided that the soviet union would get 25% of the reparations from western controlled zones in addition to the reparations from its zone in eastern germany. Deep-rooted conflicts between the USA and USSR started to surface during this meeting, despite these agreements intended to stabilize post-war Europe and rebuild Germany politically and economically, ideological disagreements were not sufficiently addressed, which predicted the growing hostilities that would define international relations in the years that followed.
