Cyprus (1 janv. 1964 – 1 janv. 1993)

Description:

Cyprus was under occupancy for a large period of time the largest being 1964 to 1993 Canada was a big part taker in the peacekeeping efforts of the island between the Greek cypriots and the turkish cypriots. Turkey has always been against Enosis of Cyprus and Greece ever since Cyprus became independent. When they were first independent there were a lot of disagreements and hostilities between the two groups which led the british who still had tow military bases on the island to draw a ceasefire line in the middle of the capital Nicosia. The UN would later have peacekeeping efforts and 6 countries would participate. Canada was the largest force on the island and was in charge of one of the most significant parts of the island. In Canada's time there Cyprus found itself engulfed in a violent civil war after a political coup d’état was initiated on July 15 by Greek Cypriots who favoured unification. Turkey launched an attack on the island and Canada was in the middle of it holding down important locations like the international airport. This Event showed a lot of continuity as Canada has always had peacekeepers on this island up to this day and there has been little to nocchange in the situation going on.
