Battle Strategy (12 avr. 1861 – 9 avr. 1865)

Description:

Union: Anaconda Plan by Winfield Scott
Blockade on Ports: cut South off from rest of the world; can’t export/import cotton or food, etc
Cut off Mississippi: Fremont instructs North to take NOLA from the South by instituting martial law; cuts off sugar (TX) and rice (LOU) → no food
Take Richmond: capital of CSA (take capital=win war)

Southern Battle Strategy: defensive/war of attrition
Like American Revolution – had more of a reason to fight
Wanted to keep it on their turf (advantage)
Believed they’d get European help because of cotton, but did not because of bumper crop and Egyptian cotton
1861: Trent Incident: Union army captures two CSA diplomats off a Brit. ship (Act of War)
The Alabama: Portugal arms a Southern gunboat, but it sinks a lot and it lowk sucks
