The earliest known fossil apes are of the diverse genus Proconsul; •Several species of Proconsul have been discovered. The smallest weighed between 9 and 12kg; the largest weighed as much as 68-90kg. All were arboreal quadrupeds;•They exhibited an unusual mix of monkey and ape traits
