Description:
Suleyman the Magnificent promoted expansion in Southwest Asia and Europe. He captured Baghdad in 1534 along with the Tigris and Euphrates River valleys while also keeping the rival Hapsburg Empire on the defensive and subjecting Vienna to a brief but terrifying siege. Suleyman's naval power came from control of the Aegean and Black Sea fleets, but also the navy of the Mamluk rulers which he used to challenege Christian vessels in the Mediterranean to gain access for Muslims like when he seized the Island of Rhodes from the Knights of St. John.
