Suleyman the Magnificent promoted expansion in Southwest Asia and Europe. He captured Baghdad in 1534 along with the Tigris and Euphrates River valleys while also keeping the rival Hapsburg Empire on the defensive and subjecting Vienna to a brief but terrifying siege.
