Election of 1848
The election of Zachary Taylor, a Whig, saw both Free Soilers (anti-slavery advocates) and pro-slavery factions battle over how the new territories gained from Mexico should handle the issue of slavery. This election occurred as the country was becoming increasingly divided over the issue of slavery.
The emergence of the Free Soil Party reflected the growing strength of anti-slavery sentiment in the North. This ideological divide would deepen in the years leading up to the Election of 1860, when sectionalism reached its peak with Lincoln’s election.
