Voyage of Circumnavigation (1 janv. 1577 – 1 janv. 1580)

Description:

Despite Queen Elizabeth’s official goal of the expedition to “find out places meet to have traffic,” Drake decided to prioritize piracy, plundering the West South American coast as he journeyed northward, loading his ships with treasure. However, mutiny was circling around his crew, and the suspected leader of the plot was tried and executed when the fleet first reached South America. Drake abandoned two of his smaller ships and traveled through the Magallan Straight, catching his second sight of the Pacific Ocean. Sailing north, Drake plundered the Spanish-occupied West South American coast as he journeyed, loading his ships with treasure. Drake even attempted to look for the Northwest Passage, even going up to at least modern-day Oregon and possibly British Columbia, yet was forced to abandon his plan when his ship sprung a leak. The Golden Hind finished the voyage with only 56 of the original 100 crew on board and heaps of treasure.
When he returned to England in 1580, King Phillip II and the other Spanish protested that he acted with the intent to commit privacy on their lands, Queen Elizabeth I traveled down to the dock and bestowed knighthood on Drake in 1581 on the Golden Hind.
