- Many believed that they would be protected if they had an independent Jewish nation in Palestine; this move was opposed by the Arabs who lived there.- After many years of disagreement, the United Nations recommended that Palestine be divided into an Arab state and a Jewish one.
- Jews face a constant threat still from the neighboring Arabs.
