Invasion
of
Poland
+
Battle of
Atlantic (1 sept. 1939 – 8 mai 1940)
Description:
On September 1, 1939, German forces launched a surprise attack on Poland, marking the start of World War II. The attack began with the predawn shelling of Polish fortifications at the Baltic port of Danzig (modern Dansk) by the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein. Sixty-two divisions, supported by over 1,300 airplanes, then coordinated an assault across the German–Polish border. Polish forces, strategically outflanked and materially outnumbered, stood little chance due to their deployment close to the German frontier, unintentionally facilitating Germany’s strategy of envelopment.
