Harold Foss "Hal" Foster (August 13, 1955) is an American art critic and historian.

Hal fosters book. ‘the return of the real’ he describes how in art sometimes history repeats itself. Foster writes that when something revisited most of the time the political nature of the time seems to change high light a different import of when it was made. If something is revisited whats left behind mostly is the essence of what it withholds. In the case the subject is art.

The neo-avant-garde is a repetition of the past, because what happens is the first wave repeats the avant-garde while in the later years of the neo-avant-garde will be seen with a more critical eye, from a new point of view. Foster sees this process as a positive thing, because it gives a new base for new developments/ new point of views.
