Causes:
Berlin seen as a gap in the iron curtain/possibility of new German incvasion + Soviet fear espionage + Mass migration from East to West (political/econmical situation + forced collectivisation = angy) = workforce leaves and harms economy

event:
1958: Nikita Khrushchev (Soviet Prime Minister) demands that Western Allies leave West Berlin, make it a "free city," (six months to comply)
-> refuse
1960: US spy plane spotted and arrested (refuse to apologise) = relations growing cold
1961: closes and wires the borders (wall complete by the next day)
=> Berlin wall to avoid confrontations
