1st Berlin crisis (24 juin 1948 – 12 mai 1949)

Description:

AKA FIRST CRISIS OF THE COLD WAR
causes:
Disagreement on Germany's fate after the war (destroy to prevent repetition//rebuild to prevent poverty -> good base for communist spread)
Marshal plan and change of currency in Trizone (which they had agrred on during Postdam conference) = Stalin also goes against their agreement and demands Berlin (in his sector) +fears western influence and strength of Germany

event:
Stalin blocks rails + asks for currency abolition
--> US counterblockade (civilian access) + "Operation Vittles" (agreement with S but refuse military forces) = negotiations and end of blockade

Consequences:
US = Victory of containment + Good press
USSR = Public protests + Humiliation
