Mexican-American War (25 avr. 1846 – 2 févr. 1848)

Description:

In 1845, the US admitted Texas into the union and marched troops into territory disputed between Texas and Mexico in order to enforce it, provoking Mexico into attacking them. Over the next two years, a major political shift occurred as the Whigs argued against the war on the grounds that the US had unjustly instigated it. Anti-slavery and abolitionist activists flocked to the party due to their own opposition to the war, seeing it as a war to expand slavery and causing the Whigs to begin tilting toward abolitionism in contrast to the largely pro-slavery Democrats. After the US won the war, the issue of slavery and its place in the war would become the dominant focus of American politics.
