Summer: Easter Germans begin fleeing to the West in mass

Gorbachev won't help East German government because the USSR doesn't have enough $$$ for it --> people became so agitated by Communism that the USSR couldn't deal with it

November: Communist Ruler announces citizens may freely immigrate to the West --> did not want to shoot its own people
- E Germans flood the border, including the Berlin wall
- Within 2 years, E + W Germany combine
