Leonid Brezhnev (1964-1985):
- Brinkmanship to Detente
- At first Brezhnev cracks down --> funds Vietnam war, Czechoslovakia
- But in the 1970s, he reduces hostility

Detente: policy of lessening the Cold War tension
- started by Nixon (Nixon is best known for the Watergate coverup that happened in 1972 but he resigned before getting impeached in 1974)
- then Brezhnev goes along with it
- Ford also continues it
