Spanish-American War (25 janv. 1898 – 14 mai 1898)

Description:

Due to several attempts by vassal states of Spain to gain independence, and United States intervention multiple times, Spain declared war on the US. They lost, and the US acquired many territories including Cuba (temporarily), the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Due to this, Cuba was able to gain a nation status and the other colonies came under US control, which allowed for greater freedoms to the citizens of such.

Due to this, the US gained a foothold in world politics, and this would play a role in the World Wars. Spain, on the other hand, was left to its homeland - where people were neglected or rioting due to the state of affairs - and in turn allowed for a cultural renaissance to occur. (History.com 2010)

As noted in the previous paragraph, the US and Spain both had some major political shifts, and some social ones as well. Spain was able to fix its inner workings, and the United States was given the opportunity to enact change among many parts of the world. In turn, resentment among many of the US colonies diminished - Cuba even grew into independence - and were lenient of bases erected in their lands.
