The First Red Scare, occurring from 1919 to 1920 in the United States, was a period of intense fear of communism, anarchism, and radical leftism, sparked by the Russian Revolution, labor strikes, and a series of bombings by anarchists. This widespread panic led to the suppression of civil liberties, with raids, arrests, and deportations of suspected radicals orchestrated by the U.S. government under Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, known as the Palmer Raids.
