Mobutu Sese Seko (1 janv. 1965 – 1 janv. 1997)

Description:

Mobutu Sese Seko gained power in a military coup killing the Congos first prime minister Patrice Lumumba . He dictated for 32 years killing his opponents holding onto power through the extension of US support and interest. Exploiting his position, Mobutu amassed immense personal wealth at the expense of his country's citizens, while providing military support to the FNLA.

In 1965, Mobutu seized govermental control. .

In 1966, the Corps of Volunteers was established, designed to mobilize popular support behind Mobutu.

In 1971, Mobutu changed the country's name to Zaire and several other cities.

In 1974, Mobutu consolidated power in a new consitution.
