Description:
In the 1830's it took as long as 2 years for a British correspondent to receive a reply to a letter sent to India by sailing ships. By the 1850's after the introduction of steamships, correspondence could make the round-trip between London and Bombay in 4 months. After the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 steamships traveled from Britain to India in less than 2 weeks
