Battle of Verdun (21 févr. 1916 – 18 déc. 1916)
Description:
France detected Germany making preparations for war in January. All railways to Verdun were cut off or under attack by German soldiers, requiring that all supplies be transported via trucks. In the end, nine villages were wiped out and 65 square miles of land were declared a “red zone” for the time that followed as the chemical residue would take years to be considered safe (Britannica.com).
