Great Purge in Russia (1 janv. 1936 – 1 janv. 1938)
Description:
Top members of the party and government publicly supported Stalin’s initiatives, but there was internal dissent. In late 1934 a top Soviet official, Sergei Kirov, was mysteriously killed. Stalin — who probably ordered Kirov’s murder — blamed the assassination on “Fascist agents” within the party. He used the incident to launch a reign of terror that purged the Communist Party of supposed traitors and solidified his own control.
