The Korean War. America’s Congress approved a $40 billion increase in the defence budget. Truman opposed using nuclear weapons in Asia, and so the war was fought using conventional weapons only.​

America developed the hydrogen bomb at its Los Alamos laboratories. An atomic bomb had 1000 times the effect of a conventional World War II bomb. But the hydrogen bomb had 1000 times the effect of the atomic bomb. Scientists such as Oppenheimer (the former leader of the Manhattan Project) were shocked: the planet was at risk. Truman endorsed the manufacture of the hydrogen bomb because he was worried that if he didn’t, then Russia would. ​
