Hereward the Wake and the Rebellion at Ely 1070-71 (1 janv. 1070 – 1 janv. 1071)
Description:
The Danes returned in 1070 and headed toward the Isle of Ely and made alliances with a local thegn called Hereward who had been exiled under Edward the Confessor's reign and returned to find his land taken over by Normans. He had been fighting a guerrilla war against the Normans. Together with the Danes, Hereward raided Peterborough Abbey to prevent its riches being taken by the Normans, but the Danes left with all the treasure. Hereward was joined by Morcar, but William found a way of attacking Ely. Morcar was captured and Hereward escaped.
