The Blitz (7 sept. 1940 – 11 mai 1941)

Description:

1. The term 'Blitz' came from the German word 'Blitzkrieg', meaning lightning war. The bombings were carried out by the 'Luftwaffe', which was the German Air Force.

2. The bombings were carried out as a result of a nighttime air raid that the British dropped on Berlin.

3. 40,000 civilians were killed by the bombings, primarily in London. More than a million houses were destroyed.

4. The most devastating raid was on the last day, the 11th of May 1941. 711 tons of high explosive bombs were dropped on London.

5. On that night, the London Fire Brigade recorded at least 2136 fires, 60 of which were deemed serious or above.
