Description:

- frech naturalist and zoologist, has studied comparative biology and dissection
- arrangend animals in 4 large groups
- broke away from the idea of the great chain of being (18th century) because no one else in the pre-darwinian era ever produced as much evidence for actually occuring evolution (he worked with fossils and showed evolution on (u.a) mammuts in comparison to indian elephants)
-> idea of extinctioni was troubling for christians
