Parliament chooses a distant cousin from Germany, George I to rule

George III is the king of Great Britain
- colonies grew a lot
- population went from 250,000 in 1700 to 2,150,000 in 1770 (x9 increase)
- colonies thrived on trade with European nations


Colonists grew a new sense of identity
- had been living in colonies for > 150 years
- 13 colonies: each had its own government (people were used to having a great degree of independence)
- were still "British subjects" and had to obey British law but saw themselves as more nationalistic to their colonies than to Britain
