Thomas Hobbes (Philosopher) (25 juill. 1588 – 25 juill. 1679)
Description:
Belief:
In nature, people were cruel, greedy, and selfish: they fight, rob, and oppress one another
People should enter a social contract to escape this: they would give up their freedom in return for the safety and order of an organized society
Believed the best government was the absolute monarchy: impose order and compel obedience and suppress rebellion
People give the government the right to do anything (king > law), even kill them
Did not believe that kings were "chosen by god"- it was the people who gave them power to keep everyone in line
Social experiment: the Civil War
Famous work: Leviathan
