Manet (20 avr. 1858 – 6 avr. 1879)

Description:

Edouard Manet was a French painter who was instrumental in the transition between Realism and Impressionism. He was a well-liked, idiosyncratic, quietly revolutionary artist who wanted to be part of the Academy. Many of his works, including the famous Luncheon on the Grass were rejected, however.

He was drawn to Velazquez, Goya, and Hals. In his art, there is a sense of immediacy. He often broke elements down into plat planes and was a frequent user of lines, which were almost always black. The tradition of modeling and chiaroscuro was lost to him as he borrowed from -- or mocked -- the past. His people are cold, distant, and disconnected and he turned his art into abstractions so people could create their own interpretation.
