Expansion of the Republic (1 janv. 509 av. J.-C. – 1 janv. 133 av. J.-C.)
Description:
Rome defeated the Latin cities, securing a strong position in central Italy, and later acquired the land to the north by defeating the Etruscans. By 265 BC Rome controlled all of the Italian Peninsula. Its task now was to rule effectively a land that included Latins, Etruscans, and Greeks. Unlike most conquering peoples, the Romans treated their subjects with mercy and fairness instead of force and oppres- sion. As long as they did not rebel, Rome’s subjects lived in relative peace.
